Panerai watch history
Italian watch company Panerai became famous due to its brilliant watches designed for military divers. In 1935 War Department decided to find a watch model that would be up to the strictest requirements of Italian military divers.
Divers needed waterproof watches with highly readable dials even in dark. A special order for development of such timekeepers was got by Guide Panerai & Figlio – the traditional supplier of timekeepers to the Royal Italian Navy.
Soon the company released a watch model called Radiomir. The model was characterized by high water resistance and really great reliability that was provided by a manual-winding movement by Rolex. The watch had a black dial with luminescent indices and hands. The dial had a multi-layered construction and had a radium coating due to which it was characterized by very high readability. The shine was so bright, that sometimes officers had to cover the dial for the sake of security during secret operations.
After a great number of tests in the March of 1936 Radiomir was included in the list of the obligatory military divers equipment. Today Panerai is justly considered to be one of those brands whose watches are always in the center of attention, though watches by Panerai are designed for a special category of fans – for people who first of all appreciate reliability, comfortable use and functional practicality. Due to high quality of its watches, due to their reliability and great design Panerai managed to become the brand that is very much loved by collectors.
